THE POWER OF GOD’S WORD “…God will not stamp His name on anything, which His word has not endorsed.” Text: Isaiah 55:1-11; Hosea 12:13; Num. 23:19

 Introduction

The world is governed by words. Physically and spiritually, there is a war of words going on around us. Written or spoken words of political leaders can alter the entire political and economic dynamics of the world. Words spoken by political leaders have the power to alter global political and economic dynamics.

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 8:4, “The king’s word is law. No one can ask him, “Why are you doing this?” (CEV)

If the words of mere mortals can exert such global influence, how powerful, then, is God’s word?

  1. The Word of God – a brief insight

God’s word is either spoken or written:

  • The word of God in simple terms is anything that God spoke directly. Example to Adam and Eve, (Gen. 2:16-17; 3:9-19), to Abraham, (Gen. 12:1-3), etc.
  • God’s word is also what He spoke through the prophets, apostles and Jesus Christ.
  • God’s word is also the written record of what the prophets, apostles and Jesus have spoken. These are commonly referred to as the Scriptures
  • Jesus Christ is God’s Word revealed

  1. God’s Word Works

Does God’s word work? Yes, it does.

God does not speak empty words and when He does, they are intentional and for a definite purpose. His words have the ability to cause a change or change a course in the life of an individual, family or a nation.

Isaiah 55:10-11

“For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (KJV)

In Isaiah 55, God made a passionate call to His children to repent and turn to Him to partake of the blessings of His covenant, i.e. receive His grace at no cost. God went on to reassure them of His commitment to His word…that they don’t return empty when spoken. Every farmer knows the importance of rain; for without rainfall, there will be draught. They know that the outburst of rain means a bumper harvest.  To get them understand the impact His word can have on their lives, He used rain, a vital ingredient in their daily life activities to establish what His word can do in their lives.

He said, “Rain and snow fall from the sky and don’t return until they have watered the ground. Then the ground causes the plants to sprout and grow, and they produce seeds for the farmer and food for people to eat.  In the same way, my words leave my mouth, and they don’t come back without results. My words make the things happen that I want to happen. They succeed in doing what I send them to do.”(ERV).

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. Rain falls intentionally and for a purpose. God has His clear intention for sending His word.
  2. After a rainfall, there is an effect. His word has the ability to cause a change and change a course in the lives of His children no matter the situation.

Hosea 12: 13 say:  “And by a prophet the Lord made Israel come up out of Egypt, and by a prophet he was kept safe.” (BBE)

The course of Israel’s history changed for good with the coming of God’s word to His children through the prophet (Moses). God’s word shall cause a change and change the course of your life today for good in Jesus’ name.

3. God’s Word is Above All

“I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.” Psalm 138: 2(KJV)

In Hebrew, the word, “magnify” means to lift up, to make great, powerful, etc.  God’s word is lifted up, greater and more power than ALL His name!

“…for you have made your word greater than all your name. “ (BBE)

A man is known by his word. The character of a man is seen in his word. If you want to know whether a man is faithful, examine his word; what happens when he speaks, do his words come to pass?

  • To a Hebrew, a person’s name described his character and nature. Biblical names, titles and descriptions of God, therefore, identify ways Bible characters personally came to know God. The Scriptures are a record of God’s revelation of Himself to people. Each name of God is part of that revelation, (Exo. 3: 13-14). The different revelations of God to His people at different times are insufficient to give a total representation of the fullness of God. God can only be understood by His unfailing word, which is the foundation upon which the various names of God are built upon.

  • The name of someone according to Hebrew custom referred to his authority and reputation. Therefore, the name of God refers to His authority and reputation. The name of Jesus Christ also refers to his authority and reputation, (Judah and Tamar, Phil. 2:9-10; John 14:13; 15:7)

  • The implication is that God has exalted His word above all other things that are under His authority and reputation, i.e. His name.

  1. The Bottom-line

This is the bottom-line about Psalm 138:2

  1. The nature and character of God’s name is revealed through His word. The Bible, which is the word of God, reveals the God behind His name. In other words, God’s word gives His name character.
  2. God will not stamp His name on anything, which His word has not endorsed,
  3. God has exalted His word above His authority and reputation; God will not use His position, i.e. His authority to change the rules (His Promises-His word). God lives by His rules

Because the Lord has through His word sanctioned good pleasures concerning you, you will indeed experience all that the Lord intends for you this season in Jesus’ name.

5. God’s Word is Faithful

God will on no occasion or reason use His position to change His words. This He confirmed to Balaam who was under pressure by Balak to curse Israel

“God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?” Numbers 23:19.

God does not say something and do another; whatever He says we can trust Him to fulfil it.

There is no going back concerning God’s word in your life. What He has promised will be established no matter the manipulations in Jesus’ name.

  1. The Word Holds All Things

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; (Heb . 1:1-3)

In establishing the Power of God’s word, the author of the Book of Hebrews made some revealing statements:

  • God in time past spoke to the patriarchs through His prophets, (vs.1) Also see Numbers 12:6
  • In our present time God speaks through His Son, Jesus Christ who is the heir of all things and through whom God created the world, (vs. 2)
  • Jesus Christ in every way is God, (vs. 3)
  • JESUS HOLDS EVERYTHING TOGETHER BY HIS WORD

Yes! The word is that powerful; the entire world…all creation is supported, suspended, held together, and sustained, etc. by the word of God the Father and the word of God the Son.

No one and nothing can survive without the word…God’s word is our life wire.

  1. The Word Has Power to Give Life

Continuing, the author of Hebrews said:

“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. “ (Heb. 4:12 KJV)

The word of God is quick because the word is living. The word of God is powerful because the word is active and has the ability to cause an effect, i.e. the ability to bring a change in the life of an individual or any situation.

  1. God’s Word Revealed

If God’s word is living and has the ability to bring a change in the life of an individual, the word cannot be inanimate. The word must be a person…a living being. Who then, is the word?

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:1-4).

Then verse 14,

“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. “

  • Jesus is incarnate and has always been with God
  • Jesus is the personal Word of God through whom the world was created. He has always been with the Father.
  • Jesus is the Word of God manifest in flesh.
  • Jesus who is the Word of God reveals the heart and mind of God. It is only by the word that we can know God
  • Because Jesus reveals the heart and mind of God; through him, God’s will and purposes for you have been endorsed.

  1. Power of the Word Demonstrated

What do you want the Word to do for you?

The centurion in Matthew 8: 5-8 whose servant was ill understood the law of authority; that Jesus Christ is above all things and situations…Jesus has all things under his feet and that distance was no barrier. With this understanding, he asked the Lord to declare his word unto his sick servant who was sick and far away.

No doubt, the Word of God broke all barriers, travelled all the way and healed the centurion’s servant

What do you want God’s Word to do for you?

God spoke and the world was created. Jesus spoke and the centurion’s servant who was miles away was healed.

  1. Your Response – Prayers

God by His Word has endorsed your salvation in Christ. By His unfailing word, God has approved all good things about you and because God will not use His position as God to alter what He has said about you, you cannot remain silent and expect a miracle to fall on your laps.

Change the course of your life right now by declaring God’s word over your situation.

Change That Attitude

💧 ISAIAH 54:1-6 MSG
“Sing, barren woman, who has never had a baby. Fill the air with song, you who’ve never experienced childbirth! You’re ending up with far more children than all those childbearing women.” God says so! “Clear lots of ground for your tents! Make your tents large. Spread out! Think big! Use plenty of rope, drive the tent pegs deep. You’re going to need lots of elbow room for your growing family. You’re going to take over whole nations; you’re going to resettle abandoned cities. Don’t be afraid—you’re not going to be embarrassed. Don’t hold back—you’re not going to come up short. You’ll forget all about the humiliations of your youth, and the indignities of being a widow will fade from memory. For your Maker is your bridegroom, his name, God-of-the-Angel-Armies! Your Redeemer is The Holy of Israel, known as God of the whole earth. You were like an abandoned wife, devastated with grief, and God welcomed you back, Like a woman married young and then left,” says your God.”

💡 Insight
Situations and reality of life sometimes limit us. But what does God expect from us? He says, begin now to act in the contrary; not as one barren (childless, in lack, in need, in desperation, etc) but as one who already has all supplies met and in excess.
God says, change that attitude!

A Living Sacrifice

“When any one of you brings an offering to the LORD…” Lev. 1:2

Just as God gave instructions to Moses on how the tabernacle was to be built, God again gave instructions to his people about the kind of offerings they were to present before him, “…without blemish…this means perfect, complete, full.
God owns the universe and He deserves the very best and whatever is to be offered to Him, should be in His perspective.
As sacrifices of grain and animals were to be presented holy before God, our lives and actions are to be no less, “For this reason I make request to you, brothers, by the mercies of God, that you will give your bodies as a living offering, holy, pleasing to God, which is the worship it is right for you to give him.” Romans 12:2 BBE
Prayer: Today, I present myself to you as a living sacrifice sanctified by your Son. Use me to the glory of your name. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen

STAND FOR YOUR FAITH “It is only a man who is influenced by the spirit of demons that will preach against the congregational worship of the Lord. So, when you hear anyone say that the age of congregational worship is over, you know who his father is.”

“Dear friends, I wanted very much to write to you about the salvation we all share together. But I felt the need to write to you about something else: I want to encourage you to fight hard for the faith that God gave his holy people. God gave this faith once, and it is good for all time.” Jude 1:3 ERV
While some will say that there is almost nothing anyone can possibly do to defend our faith in Christ as God has all it takes to defend Himself, there is, however, so much that can be done to keep the saints from falling prey to the subtle devices of the enemy in these difficult times of the Church.
I must say that events in the social media and others we see, read or hear in the traditional media are not new as every generation in times past have had to fight religious deceptions. The early apostles fought it, others after them fought it and we, too must face these challenges. The issue of tithes and offerings is still a heated debate in the social media. One well-known preacher of the gospel (in Nigeria) wrote saying some time ago that the blood of Jesus cannot redeem anyone from sin. There have been issues with others (even) ascribing to themselves the personality and office of Jesus Christ by their speech. It will take a discerning heart to judge rightly. We have read about and seen on television and the social media of certain men who claim to be of God perform weird miracles and do unusual things. We have also heard about the grass eating Church, the pastor who heals with insecticides and another who also heals with antiseptic. The list goes on and on.
The core of the above is in verse 4, “Some people have secretly entered your group. These people have already been judged guilty for what they are doing. Long ago the prophets wrote about them. They are against God. They have used the grace of our God in the wrong way—to do sinful things. They refuse to follow Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord.” ERV
The long list of Scriptures below will help a great deal
Mat 13:25 – “But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.”
Act 15:24 –“Forasmuch as we have heard, that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying, Ye must be circumcised, and keep the law: to whom we gave no such commandment.”
Gal 2:4 – “And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage.”
2Pe 2:1- 2 “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.”
Unfortunately, many of us have been taken unawares by the antics of these false prophets in our times. Many of us have indeed become captives of some of these false teachings. Here is an example:
I was in a commuter vehicle but unusually, I heard the driver sing some beautiful songs. Never have I heard a driver sing so melodiously! But here I was hearing one sing “Church Songs.” One more thing drew my attention. I noticed that most of the songs had been revised…not the exact words that I knew.
Here is the song that I know and there indeed many versions of this song: I have decided to follow Jesus (3x), No turning back (2x). Now, this is his version. I have decided to follow Jesus…and, not Church. I have decided to follow Jesus…and not pastor. I have decided to follow Jesus, Church leave me alone, pastor leave me alone.
Of course, the Church is the body of our Lord Jesus Christ. So, our fellowship with the Lord is not about a particular denomination and neither are we to worship any pastor. We are to worship the Lord and the Lord alone. Thus, on the surface he is correct. He sang many other such songs. But I knew that there was something wrong with his beautiful renditions.
So, what was it?
As I alighted from the vehicle, I put my head through the front passenger window, smiled at him, then, I said, “My friend you sing so well.” He gave me a broad smile and said, “thank you, sir.” I continued, “But your songs seem to be unusual; the words are not in tune with the Scriptures!” He laughs at this point, then, all hell was let loose.
He quoted the following Scriptures
Mat 24:1- 2 “And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”
Acts 7:48 – “Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet.”
Act 17:24 – “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands.
Joh 4:20 – 24 –“Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
1Co 1:11 – “For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
And there seem to be nothing wrong with these Scriptures, too right? Very well!
I listened very well to all his quotations and explanations, then, I said, “You seem to know the Scriptures a lot, too. But your applications are all wrong.
Explanation 1 – (Matthew 24:1-2) According to him, Jesus himself prophesied that the Old Testament concept of worshipping God as a congregation in any building (Temple) would stop in the New Testament. Thus, the idea of gathering together as a congregation (Church) in the New Testament under any circumstance is unscriptural.
Explanation 2 – (Acts 7:48; 17:24) From this he explained that God no longer lives within buildings. Thus, it’s sinful and unscriptural to gather in worship in a commonplace as a Church.
Explanation 3 – (John 4:20-24) Like explained above, God encourages true individual worship but not congregational worship…no more in the mountains where people gather
Explanation 4 – (1 Cor. 1:11) He upheld that the Church is faced with so many problems because God is against congregational worship.
Do you get the gist? Do you remember his songs? Do you now understand why? I want you to imagine the number of people he has misled…beautiful Scriptures! But you have got to be able to compare spiritual things with spiritual things…”And these are the things which we say, not in the language of man’s wisdom, but in words given to us by the Spirit, judging the things of the spirit by the help of the Spirit. (1 Cor. 2:13 BBE). Again, read, “Now these were more noble than the Jews of Thessalonica, for they gave serious attention to the word, searching in the holy Writings every day, to see if these things were so.” (Act 17:11 BBE).
It is only a man who is influenced by the spirit of demons that will preach against the congregational worship of the Lord. So, when you hear anyone say that the age of congregational worship is over, you know who his father is.
I praise the Lord that God desires our individual and congregational worship and in fact, worship is to eternity, “The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” (Rev 4:10 – 11; 5:14 KJV)
Be careful about what you watch, listen to and read because angels of darkness now present themselves as angels of light, (2 Cor. 11:14)
Arise and stand for your faith.
