”…and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.” Numbers 27:7
Like most cultures and traditions in Nigeria and Africa as a whole, women are excluded from family inheritance. It is so bad that if in a family the only male child is as young as 10 years, he is considered of a higher value than a woman in her fifties even if they are all from the same parents. In such families, decisions cannot be taken except that little boy lends his voice. If for any reason he says anything contrary to what his elder sisters have said, his view will be upheld above those of his sisters simply because he is a man.
Thus, if inheritance is to be shared, women from such cultures get nothing. While speaking on this same subject some weeks back to a group of Christians, a woman confided in me after the meeting that she was a victim.
This was the case of the daughters of Zelophehad. The law prohibited women in Israel from inheriting anything from their father as all property went to the male children. Their father Zelophehad died without a male child and in keeping the law, their portion of inheritance was to pass to the surviving male sibling of their father.
These daughters did not take no for an answer. They went before Moses and presented their case. Moses in turn present this same case before God. And God the Creator of the ends of the earth altered this law on account of the daughters of Zelophehad and the inheritance became theirs.
Many suffer injustices on account of the law. But God can alter even a well pronounced legal system just for you as He did for these daughters. There is nothing too difficult for Him to do.
What has the law deprived you of? You can get that law changed today.
